# Introduction

SapphireDAO is an open-source, decentralized payment platform that allows users to pay for goods and services using cryptocurrency. Smart contracts process payments, which are kept in escrow until release requirements are fulfilled.

Sellers generate invoices directly in the [Simple Processor](/sapphiredao-docs/how-to-guide/use-the-simple-processor.md). In contrast, invoices can also be generated through authorized third-party platforms via the [API](/sapphiredao-docs/technical-docs/api-communication.md) calling the [Intermediated Processor](/sapphiredao-docs/technical-docs/core-contracts/intermediatedpaymentprocessor.sol.md), which offers additional features such as dispute resolution, support for different payments options, and [meta-invoices](/sapphiredao-docs/user-docs/invoices.md#meta-invoice)
